BRAC History

In January 2023, Dr. Karen Young purchased Boston Road Animal Clinic due to Dr. Burns’ decision to take steps toward retirement. Since then, the BRAC facility has undergone a transformation with the addition of multiple exam rooms, surgery suites, and a diagnostic laboratory to expand the service capabilities of the practice and continue patients with the same high-level quality expected by the community.

Dr. Young is dedicated to providing pets with compassionate, high-quality care and believes strongly in preventative care and wellness. Her favorite part of veterinary medicine is the reuniting of pet owners with their healthy pets after illnesses and watching their bond grow over the years. The joy in both the owner and pets’ faces is what drives her to continue providing the best care possible to keep those pets happy and healthy as long as possible.

Dr. Young’s connection to Boston Road Animal Clinic goes back over 30 years. She met Dr. Burns and his wife at Russell Cave Baptist Church at the age of 8 years old and was very intrigued by his chosen profession. Dr. Burns quickly became a mentor to Dr. Young and she spent every opportunity she had observing his work at Boston Road Animal Clinic. She even observed her first surgery with Dr. Burns, which cemented her desire to pursue becoming a veterinarian.

Dr. Young grew up in Lexington and was a part of the Math, Science and Technology Program at Paul Laurence Dunbar during her high school years. She then attended the University of Kentucky for her degree in Animal Sciences. After college, she went to Auburn University to obtain her Veterinary Degree and graduated in 2009. During her college summers, she worked at Boston Road and Rood and Riddle as a veterinary assistant. She worked in a laboratory with one of her professors at Auburn during the vet school summers . When she graduated veterinary school, she moved to Summerville, Georgia and worked at a mixed animal practice for 3 years, before having the opportunity to pursue her dreams of owning her own clinic here in Kentucky. Since returning home to Kentucky, Dr. Young has cared for thousands of patients, from dogs and cats to cattle and exotics. Her passion for the welfare of animals is unwavering as she continues to serve her patients while beginning a new adventure at Boston Road Animal Clinic.

Dr. Young cannot wait to meet you and your furry family members. She looks forward to helping facilitate a long, happy and healthy life for them so that they can be the important part of your family that they are meant to be.
